VUCA MODEL
Navigating Uncertainty In Your Career
Overcome Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity & Ambiguity
A key objective of my work as an Executive & Career Coach is to help my clients survive and thrive in environments dominated by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA).
Originally coined by the US military to describe specific situations and scenarios, VUCA can now be used as a catch-all term to contextualise many of the key challenges faced by individuals, organisations and countries today. These include:
Technological Disruption
Geopolitical Conflicts & Tensions
Climate Change
Longevity & The End Of Lockstep
The Rise Of Exponential Organisations
Public Health Emergencies
The reality is that we now live in a far less stable and predictable world. Despite having access to more data, information and knowledge than ever before, in many ways the future feels more uncertain.
Technological change is creating unprecedented levels of complexity and disruption. And, the choice of which measures and metrics we should use to assess and quantify success and achievement are more ambiguous and less clear.
Moving forward, it's going to be increasingly important that individuals and organisations develop the competencies and capabilities to effectively manage all four of the VUCA dynamics. You'll find a summary of each of them below. Use the sliders to create a visual representation of where you sit in relation to each dynamic.
Volatility
A high level of Volatility is often associated with significant and/or rapid shifts in attitudes, beliefs and behaviours due to uncontrollable forces and catalysts for change. Use the slider to represent how much volatility vs stability you're experiencing in your life at the moment.

Uncertainty
A high level of Uncertainty is often associated with unpredictability, significant potential for surprise, and the inability to determine what is likely to happen next. Use the slider to represent the level of uncertainty vs certainty or your current circumstances.

Complexity
A high level of Complexity is often associated with complicated dynamics between multiple interrelated forces, resulting in confusion, hard-to-predict issues and unintended consequences. Use the slider to reflect the balance between Complexity & Simplicity in your life.

Ambiguity
A high level of Ambiguity is often associated with a lack of clarity, misreading of situations, a difficulty interpreting the implications of changed circumstances and an inability to confidently determine a path forward. Where do you feel you are between Ambiguity & Clarity?
